On Friday Jan. 19, unusual water activity was reported by the spillway. The Dam Maintenance committee put bags of concrete around the leak running along side the spillway. The temporary dam reduced the amount of water exiting the lake; but, it didn’t completely resolve the issue because of the force of the water exiting the lake. After considerable deliberations, the spillway gate was opened Friday afternoon. It is lowering the lake by approximately 6” per day.
The Dam committee has been monitoring the situation daily and taking proactive measures. We will maintain the lake level at 508’ (2 feet below normal pool) for now. This level may vary depending on the weather. If rain is expected, we may need to proactively lower the lake more because of the anticipated inflow of water.
The root cause of the leak has not been determined; it appears to be dirt washing out along the spillway, not a problem with the concrete of the spillway. We have been in contact with several external parties including the project engineers to resolve the issue. We will know more when we get their reports and feedback.
