This is the second in a series of articles on project priorities from the Dunlap Lake 20-Year Master Plan.

The second capital priority listed in the Dunlap Lake Master Plan is digging out a pond with a special drain system at the bottom so that material removed from the catch basin can dry before it is hauled away.

While this dewatering pond feels expensive to build initially, engineers have determined this is the most cost-effective solution long-term. Once built, it can be used over and over making cleaning out the catch basin or dredging coves much more affordable in the future.

In 2014 the Association voted to restructure the assessments to $500.00 a year to raise the funds to purchase the 7-acre property at 840 East Lake to build this pond. To date, $192,000 has been paid on this property.

A 50,000 cubic yard dewatering pond can be built on this property to hold “slurry,” a mixture of water and material pumped from the lake. The water would drop down and run through a filtered piping system which would return clean water back to the lake. The dry material would be removed and possibly even sold.

The first clean up event would remove material from the south end catch basin and then the adjacent cove between West Lake Drive Drive and East Lake Drive up along Lotus as far as pond capacity allows. Then the dewatering pond can be used over and over to clean out other areas of the lake.

A ballot will be arriving in your mailbox soon. Voting yes will allow the association to spend association funds and go after grant money to dig out a dewatering pond at 840 East Lake Drive.

An engineer’s drawing of one option for the dewatering pond is shown above. The wide line between the small black lines would be the top of a berm around the water. The rows of trees around the property would remain.
